Le National Women’s History Museum publie:

#DidYouKnow In 1967 Kathrine Switzer became the first woman to run the Boston Marathon as a numbered entry when she used her first and middle initials to register. In 1967, women were barred from participating in the Boston Marathon and, as a consequence, two miles into Switzer’s run a race official forcibly attempted to pull her registered number off. The incident was captured on film and widely published. It was not until 1972 that women were officially allowed to participate in the Boston Marathon. Switzer competed and placed third in that marathon and has since run 39 marathons (and counting). Switzer has been widely praised for her athleticism and activism. She was inducted into the National Distance Running Hall of Fame and awarded the Billie Jean King Award from the Women’s Sport Foundation. (Photo Credit: Boston Herald) #WomeninSports #WomensHistory
